Hay Bale Straw Bale Gardening Planting The Plants And Seeds Y Today i show you how i directly planted carrot seeds and radish seeds into a steaw bale garden. i also show you the progress i have made on the no till garde. Sometimes known as bale gardening, or hay bale gardening, a straw bale garden uses ordinary farmer's straw as the principal growing medium. when you condition a straw bale for gardening with a small amount of potting soil, compost, and fertilizer, the straw itself breaks down gradually, providing its own nutrients throughout the growing season. Water well while plants get established. keep your plants well watered, especially in hot or dry weather, until their roots reach deeper into the bale. while straw bales are great at holding onto moisture in the middle, the tops will still dry out during drought or extreme heat, just like a raised bed. In order to plant them, i like to put them right along the top edge of the bale. you want to keep the root about 2, 3, 4 inches deep down inside the bale, and just let the top leaves stick out the side. we want to keep that root near our irrigation system, so we make sure we get plenty of water.
