Exploring Ocean Floor Features In Geography Study Material Course Hero While the ocean has an average depth of 2.3 miles, the shape and depth of the seafloor is complex. some features, like canyons and seamounts, might look familiar, while others, such as hydrothermal vents and methane seeps, are unique to the deep. this graphic shows several ocean floor features on a scale from 0 35,000 feet below sea level. Features Of The Ocean Floor The sloped bottom of the ocean that extends from the continental shelf down to the deep ocean bottom. mid ocean ridge. mountain range on the ocean floor where magma upwells and new ocean floor is formed. seamount. a mountain rising from the seafloor that does not reach above the surface of the water. usually formed from volcanoes. Ocean floor overview. the ocean floor, or seabed, is a term used to describe the top layer of oceanic crust found on the bottom of the ocean just above the mantle. this crust is made of rock. Introduction to the ocean floor. fig. 7.1. a us navy oceanographic survey ship using a multi beam wide angle sonar system to map the ocean floor. the ocean floor covers more than 70 percent of the planet’s surface. like dry land, the ocean floor has various features including flat plains, sharp mountains, and rugged canyons (fig. 7.1). The ocean floor is literally just the floor of the ocean. the landscape of the ocean floor is much like what you see on land, just way more dramatic and without all that life. you'll see.

Table 7.6 lists many of the common features of the seafloor and coastline. table 7.6. common features of the seafloor and coastline. abyssal plain. a flat region of deep ocean basins. alluvial fan. a broad, sloping deposit of sediments at the mouth of a river or at the foot of a submarine canyon or a river canyon. atoll. The sea floor then drops off steeply along the continental slope, the true edge of the continent. the smooth, flat regions that make up 40% of the ocean floor are the abyssal plain. running through all the world’s oceans is a continuous mountain range, called the mid ocean ridge (“submarine ridge” in figure 14.23).
